|We, Joe and Hazel with our
daughter Amy have operated Blossom Hill Nursery since 1994.
Initially, besides our full time jobs, we worked as property
maintenance contractors but soon realized we would rather work at
home. We started selling perennials as well as the delphiniums we
had developed from the British strain as a specialty.
Soon Amy, at the age of 13, surprised us with a webpage that she had developed. She literally has grown up with the nursery.
A second passion evolved in 2004 when we acquired a heritage peony collection. It has resulted in an extensive collection of over 650 varieties including species, tree, herbaceous and intersectional peonies. We hybridize and propagate the peonies, including grafting 100 varieties of tree peonies.
An interest in horticulture and nature led to the third passion in 2009 of beekeeping.
Our delphiniums and peonies have won multiple awards in both Canada and the United States. In 2015, our peonies won both the American Peony Society and the Canadian Peony Society championships. Our business also was honoured with two business achievement awards from the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce and from Peterborough County.
Hazel is currently a director and the corresponding secretary of the American Peony Society.
The three of us share all the responsibilities and fun at the nursery/farm but each of us has our strengths. Amy is solely responsible for the webpage but also lends a hand whenever available. Office duties are dealt with by Hazel but she is most enthusiastic about gardening and nurturing the honeybees, especially grafting queens. Joe is a very handy machinist, gardener and beekeeper, readily tackling any ‘Joe’ jobs.
Our extended family includes Amber, our yellow lab who is our greeter and the newest family member, Shadow, the cat who is very difficult to spot in the garden.
